Stamp Out Hunger 2015 Food Drive

May 29, 2015

Every May the National Association of Letter Carriers teams up with their local food banks for a gigantic nationwide food drive. Postal workers from all over the country urge their residents to leave donations of non-perishable food items on their porch or near their mailbox and the letter carriers collect all the donations for the less fortunate.

With so many residents participating in the food drive, that creates a serious obstacle for food banks to transport all the donations from the various post offices to the their warehouse. That's where our fantastic movers come in. This is the fourth year our movers have donated their resources to take part of the Stamp Out Hunger Drive. All across the country Move For Hunger movers partnered up with their local food bank to assist in the enormous task of transporting all the donations.

Thanks to our Movers' tremendous efforts, they transported over 511,800 lbs. to food banks. The timing for this drive couldn't be better, as many food banks find it difficult to keep their shelves full during the summer months. Every dollar we can save the food banks from spending on transportation, is another dollar that can be spent on lifesaving meals for the least fortunate.

511,802 lbs. = 426,502 meals for the less fortunate.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
