Spuds, Spurs and Stars at CHPA!

February 19, 2016

CHPA 2016_truckMove For Hunger was incredibly excited to join our Corporate Housing partners at the annual Corporate Housing Providers Association (CHPA) conference this February in Fort Worth, Texas. Not only were our fantastic members present, but Move For Hunger is also the official charity of this great organization.

The event kicked off with a volunteer activity for CHPA members at the Tarrant Area Food Bank where we were put to work bagging and sorting through over 14,000 pounds of potatoes. Members got down and dirty with the spuds, making 10 pounds bags to be available for those in need in the Fort Worth area. As an added bonus, one of our most supportive partners, Firefighting's Finest Moving and Storage joined the group with their Move For Hunger wrapped truck.

Adam_CHPA2016_PresentationWith CHPA's support, Move For Hunger was able to promote the program and enroll new members at the three day conference. In addition to having a table at the event, our own Adam Lowy gave a speech on Move For Hunger, encouraging providers to sign up. A special thanks to CHPA for allowing us the opportunity to educate their members on how they can fight food waste and hunger in their industry.

AVE_AwardMove For Hunger was also lucky to present our first ever Corporate Housing Provider of the Year Award to AVE by Korman Communities. With 6 locations in New Jersey and the Greater Philadelphia area enrolled in the program, AVE has gone above and beyond in their fight against hunger and food waste. By participating in events such as our 2nd annual Truck Pull, Team Move For Hunger at the Rock 'n' Roll Philadelphia 1/2 Marathon and planning their own resident parties, AVE is dedicated to the cause.  Since they've joined the program, AVE has helped to collect and deliver over 1,900 pounds of food! Thank you AVE for your support, we look forward to an even better 2016!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
