Seventh Annual Foodstock Brings in Over 22 Tons of Food

November 1, 2016

Foodstock 2016For the seventh year in a row, Bob Swisher's Foodstock partied hard and collected tens of thousands of pounds of food to benefit the hungry in New Jersey.

For six hours on October 15 at the Freehold Independent Firehouse #1 at 330 Stillwells Corner Rd. in Freehold, New Jersey, Foodstock 2016 offered local bands, great food, and friendly company to all those who attended, asking only for a food donation as an entry fee. For every 25 pounds of food donated, people were entered into a raffle for Giants and Jets tickets, encouraging all of those who attended to help them collect as many pounds as possible.

Over the previous six years, Foodstock has collected a combined 170,000 lbs of food and Foodstock 2016raised over $70,000 in donations, so they had large shoes to fill this year, and boy did they do that. In collecting 45,000 pounds of food,  Foodstock -- with Lowy's Moving Service, a Wheaton agent, as the transporters -- has provided local food pantries like Open Door in Freehold and Lunch Break in Red Bank, with over 37,000 meals for the over 58,000 people affected by food insecurity in Monmouth County.

Foodstock 2016Because of people like Bob and everyone involved in Foodstock, we've seen the number of food insecure people in Monmouth County drop. Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
