October 21, 2015

The SEPTEMBER 2015 MOVER OF THE MONTH goes to...Amazing Moves Moving and Storage of Colorado!

Move for Hunger partners with hundreds of moving and relocation companies throughout the country. Each of these companies do their part collecting food and volunteering their time and equipment to fight hunger and eliminate amazing movesunnecessary food waste. Every month, we like to recognize one moving company who has gone above and beyond giving back to help their community. This month we would like to recognize Amazing Moves Moving and Storage of Colorado as our Mover of the Month for going that extra mile to help others in need.

amazingAmazing Moves Moving and Storage was founded in 2003 by Marshall Aikman and Padraic McHale. The both of them were young entrepreneurs, with knowledge in the moving industry, looking to start a business of their own. It wasn’t long before their company took off and became the thriving business it is today. Fast forward to present day, Amazing Moves is a huge advocate for local charities and organizations. Besides partnering with Move For Hunger, they've supported Cancer League of Colorado, Tour De Cure Colorado, March of Dimes and many many more.

The fantastic folks working at Amazing Moves recognized the problem families are facing with food insecurityAmazingMoves throughout their area and wanted to figure out a way they could give back and help. Food insecurity is a widespread struggle affecting over 97,000 people in the Denver, Colorado area.  That ends up being more than 15% of the population that are unsure where their next meal is going to come from. So instead of sitting back and hoping others take care of the issue, they pooled their resources and came up with a brilliant plan to get the community involved and sponsor a truck pull event. They ended up organizing a highly successful Truck Pull that took place on September 19th at Lincoln Tech sending over 300 pounds of food and cash donations to the Food Bank of the Rockies.

Since partnering with Move For Hunger in February of 2014, Amazing Moves Moving & Storage has already collected over 2,600 pounds of food. That is something to be very proud of. Amazing Moves has earned the right to call themselves our Mover of the Month. Keep up the magnificent work. Your efforts surely have not gone unnoticed.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
