September Mover of the Month: Anchor Moving and Storage

October 13, 2016

Each month, we highlight one of the moving companies in our network for their extraordinary commitment to fighting hunger in their community. We are excited to announce that Anchor Moving and Storage, an Atlas agent, is our Mover of the Month for September, 2016!

AnchorMovingAndStorage_logoAnchor Moving and Storage was one of the first members to join our program, signing on way back in November of 2010. They have fully embraced the Move For Hunger model, as their frequent deliveries to the Food Bank of South Jersey will attest.

In addition to asking their clients to "donate their food when they move," Anchor has volunteered its time and resources to assist with a number of food drives. Last year, La Salle University student Chris Carlino was able to collect nearly 500 pounds of food thanks to the generosity of Anchor's crew. Carlino and the team at Anchor teamed up again this September to help adults with brain damage host a food drive during Hunger Action Month.

Anchor Moving and Storage has proven to be one of our most reliable and committed partners. Just last week, for example, despite short notice and the fact that it was taking place on a Saturday afternoon, Anchor agreed to send a truck to pick up the donations from the Pine Hill Scout Reservation's Cub Fun Day food drive.

Since joining the program almost six years ago, Anchor Moving and Storage has delivered over 3,000 pounds of food - that's over 2,400 meals - to the Food Bank of South Jersey.

Congratulations to Anchor Moving & Storage on this much-deserved recognition. Thank you for commitment to reducing food waste and fighting hunger in the Garden State!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
