The Runner’s Reflector | Spring 2017

June 27, 2017

Team Move For Hunger came storming out of the gates this spring. In the past 3 months, we've seen our single-largest fundraiser to date, a mover run further than any Team member ever has before, and one of our interns step up and turn his miles into meals.

Race Team Sets Record at Big Sur Marathon

For the second year in a row, Team Move For Hunger was proud to be an official charity for the Big Sur International Marathon. This well-respected race is often touted as a “bucket list” race by runners, and features challenging elevation changes, dramatic scenery, and world-class support.

Two dozen runners, including David Bargueno, who raised $1,320, signed up to turn their miles into meals at this year’s race, and each had a fundraising goal of $1,000. We’re proud to say that 21 of our team members reached that goal and together raised $25,879, which makes this our single-largest fundraiser to date!

Meet "The Ultramover"

Jake Green of Dixie Moving & Storage, a Bekins agent based in Washington, Utah, competed in the Bryce Canyon 50-mile race on June 17. He now has his sights set on a 100K in July, and a 100-mile race somewhere down the road.

We met Jake at the Wheaton/Bekins conference in 2016 and he immediately immersed himself and the company in the program. Like so many of our members, Jake has seen how much is wasted during the relocation process and vowed to do something about it.

“I move people on a regular basis that end up throwing away a lot of food that could be donated or given to somebody that doesn’t know where their next meal is coming from," he says.

Moving For Hunger in the Mile High City

Team Move For Hunger returned to Denver for the third year in a row to take on the Colfax Marathon, 1/2 Marathon, Relay, Urban 10 Miler & 5K on May 21. Runners/walkers from Colorado Hi-Tec Moving & Storage, a Wheaton agent, and American Moving & Storage, a Bekins agent participated in the 1/2 marathon and 5K. They also turned their miles into meals by raising more than $2,300 to support our hunger relief and food waste reduction efforts!

An Intern Goes The Extra 13.1 Miles

For the fifth year in a row, Team Move For Hunger partnered with the New Jersey Marathon, 1/2 Marathon, Relay & 5K to fight hunger in the Garden State. This is a race that’s near and dear to our hearts, as it takes place in Long Branch, NJ, which is just a 10-minute car ride (or a nice 7-mile jog) from our office in Asbury Park.

This year’s NJ Marathon Team got an unexpected boost  when one of our interns, John McLaughlin, told us that he wanted to sign up for the race and turn his miles into meals.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
