Riding the Wave at the Annual CHPA Conference

March 2, 2017

Once again, Move For Hunger was honored to be part of the Corporate Housing Providers Association's (CHPA) annual conference in Huntington Beach, California. Held right on the Pacific Coast Highway, this conference featured a lot of sun, surf, and sand, but attendees also made time to fight hunger while they were there.

The activities began with a volunteer shift at the Someone Cares Soup Kitchen in Costa Mesa. This facility provides a daily nutritional meal to homeless, unemployed, working poor families, senior citizens, under-employed, the mentally and physically challenged, and children. The Move For Hunger staff and employees from B&B Rentals and Cort Furniture Rental rolled up their sleeves to prepare meals for the approximately 350 people that are served by this kitchen daily.

CHPA also supported Move For Hunger throughout the conference by providing numerous fundraising and promotional opportunites.

On Tuesday morning, dedicated members showed up bright and early for a walk along the beach with the Move For Hunger team, raising money and awareness for the cause. In addition, professional headshots were provided in exchange for a donation. Funds were also raised through a silent auction and a 50/50 raffle.

Finally, Move For Hunger honored our Corporate Housing Provider of the Year, VIP Corporate Housing. The team at VIP have gone above and beyond to fight hunger and food waste in the relocation industry. Not only have they made regular donations, VIP has also held food drives and has signed on as a signature partner. Since becoming a member in 2016, VIP  Corporate Housing has collected more than 700 pounds of food - enough to provide about 600 meals.

Our partnership with CHPA continues to grow thanks to it members, and we are so grateful for their support.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
