Sustainable Pittsburgh, a nonprofit organization aimed towards making sustainability easy for businesses and communities, recently launched a Sustainable Pittsburgh Restaurant Program. Participating restaurants are offered ways in which they can reduce their environmental footprint, including ways in which they can donate food to local food banks. Each restaurant that participates in this program is added to a restaurant finder, making it easy to find participating eateries.
Program manager of Sustainable Pittsburgh Restaurant, Rebecca Bykoski, mentions that the program is meant to be adaptable and accessible to any restaurant. "It is not designed to be something that is just for restaurants that are high achieving in regards to sustainability. It can also provide a framework for those who might not be implementing a lot of sustainable practices."
Even restaurants that already have established sustainability programs can find small, achievable goals through the Sustainable Pittsburgh Restaurant Program.
Megan Lindsey, owner of Franktuary Restaurant in Lawrenciville Pennsylvania, says "Before this process, if you had asked me what we do that is sustainable, I probably wouldn’t even have thought to say, ‘Oh, we train our staff and we want them to be healthy and we encourage them to eat well and be well. There's a greater mindfulness."
