Move For Hunger has announced its newest addition to the Board of Directors, Regi Young!

Regi Young is the Executive Director of the Alameda County Community Food Bank in Oakland, CA. The Alameda County Community Food Bank distributes enough meals to feed more than 70,000 food insecure people daily and serves nearly 150,000 people in need in Alameda County.

“It is an honor to join the Move for Hunger team and be a part of an organization that is rooted in the belief that food is a fundamental humanReginald-Young2.jpg right,” said Young. “This is a position that aligns with my personal mission, and I look forward to supporting our efforts to combat hunger while also reducing waste.”

Young has worked in hunger relief for over a decade, beginning his career as a community organizer working to bring technology and economic resources to neighborhoods in Houston, TX. Later, he was 1 of 6 people selected to participate in Feeding America’s inaugural Child Hunger Corps program, where he partnered with staff at the Houston Food Bank to assess and develop their hunger-relief programs.

Upon completion of his service term, Regi joined the staff of Houston Food Bank and served in multiple capacities before being named Chief Strategy Officer in 2020. He is interested in the impact design can have in addressing social problems and has served in his current role at Alameda County Community Food Bank since 2021.

“We are beyond excited to officially have Regi on our board! His expertise in working food security is extremely valuable to Move For Hunger,” said Adam Lowy, Executive Director and Founder of Move For Hunger. “We appreciate his passion for our work, and we are excited to collaborate together to reduce hunger and food waste in the United States.”

Regi attended Millsaps College in Jackson, Mississippi, where he received a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science, as well as the University of Houston-Clear Lake where he received a Master of Arts in Cross-Cultural Studies. He is currently pursuing a doctorate in Organizational Leadership from Northeastern University. Regi lives in Oakland and enjoys exploring the East Bay food scene with family and friends.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
