Peyton’s Promise Hosts It's First Front Porch Food Drive

October 14, 2020

The pandemic has thrust many families that were once able to provide for themselves into a state of financial instability and food insecurity. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, over 50 million people are at risk of experiencing food insecurity. This risk is high for children as well, with 17 million children facing food insecurity.

Peyton’s Promise is an organization with a mission that aligns with ours. They hope to provide enough food so that food pantries always have the resources they need to provide for those suffering from food insecurity.

Within their overarching promise to fight against hunger in America, they have three main goals. They want to raise awareness about the ongoing problem of food insecurity, keep food pantries shelves full, and fight childhood obesity.

Peyton’s Promise is a food bank located centrally in Wisconsin. It allows kids in grades 4th through 12th to get involved and support 50 local food pantries in their county.

Last year from Sept. 28 to Oct. 3, Peyton’s Promise hosted their first food drive. The Peyton’s Promise Front Porch Food Drive collected 1,736 lbs of food, equal to 1,447 meals.

Before the pandemic, Marathon Country, Wisconsin, had a 7.8% overall food insecurity rate. In 2020 the overall food insecurity rate was projected to jump to 10.8%.

Peyton’s Promise successfully and substantially helped their county with their food donation. We look forward to seeing what they do next!

Currently, Peyton’s Promise has a team of 186 kids working throughout the county to support the 50 local food pantries in their county!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
