Petro Stopping Centers Stops Hunger in Hunterdon County!

January 27, 2016

Petro Stopping Centers in Borendtown, NJ not only sells food to people on the go, but they donate it to people in need! Joining forces with Move For Hunger, William Figueroa and his the team at Petro Stopping Centers recently held a food drive event from November 28, 2015 to January 1, 2016. All together, the team collected 64 pounds of food. This amount equals 54 meals for those suffering from food insecurity in the community.

Simonik Transportation & Warehousing Group, LLC of Burlington, NJ generously provided the supplies and transportation to make this event possible! At the end of the drive, Simonik Transportation & Warehousing Group delivered the collection of food to the St. Vincent DePaul food bank in Medford, NJ to benefit the food insecure community of Medford and neighboring towns. SimonikTransportationAndWarehousing_logo

Unfortunately, about 9,150 of the population of Hunterdon County is unsure about where their next meal is coming from. On behalf of the staff at Move For Hunger, I want to thank you Petro Stopping Centers, Simonik Transportation & Warehousing Group, and everyone who donated for advocating the fight against this staggering statistic.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
