Over 690 lbs of Food Collected in Cape Coral

July 14, 2015

Food driverAfter a long day at work you are making dinner at home and realize that you forget a key ingredient in your family's secret recipe. You drive over to the grocery store, grab what you need and head back home. Grocery shopping can be considered a minute, everyday task to some, but to others it is a luxury that they may not be able to afford.  In Lee County, Florida,  nearly 93,000 individuals, including one in four children, struggle to find their next meal. Realizing how much hunger affects their community, Frank & Sons Moving & Storage Inc. partnered with Modern Woodmen of America on Saturday, July 11th, to hold food drive at Sam's Club in Cape Coral, Florida, to make a difference in their local community.

Thanks to generous grocery shoppers, over 690 pounds of food was collected in front of Sam's Club in just one day! The food was delivered by Frank & Sons Moving & Storage to the Harry Chapin Food Bank of Southwest Florida, providing meals to those facing food insecurity in Lee County.Frank and Sons and Modern Woodmen Food Drive

Along with collecting non-perishable food items, monetary donations were also accepted at the food drive. Dedicated to touching lives and securing futures, Modern Woodmen of America matched any donations raised during the food drive, bringing the total amount of donations to over $850!

Food drives such as these have a great impact on the local community. To find out how you can get involved and hold a food drive, visit MoveForHunger.org

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
