No Fools Here! Nelson Westerberg & Copher Moving Support Local Chicagoans During April Foods Day

May 10, 2022

April Foods Day is an annual food collection event, hosted by United Way that addresses food insecurity in the south and southwest suburbs of Chicago. The event took place at the Tinley Park Convention Center, where they collected more than 78,000 lbs of donations for 10 food pantries in south and southwest Chicago.

In preparation for the event, Nelson Westerberg of Illinois volunteered to transport 16,000, 1-liter water bottles donated by Teddy’s Fruit & Meat Market, a family-owned fresh meat market in Illinois.

Additionally, another Move For Hunger mover transported food donate at the event itself.  Copher Movers & Storage, an agent for Wheaton and part of the Move For Hunger network, volunteered to transport 10,000lbs of nonperishable food donations from the event.

Copher Movers & Storage have been part of the Move For Hunger network since 2010, and has since collected and provided nearly 13,000lbs of donations, equalling over 10,700 meals for Chicagoans in need.

Nelson Westerberg partnered with Move For Hunger in 2012, and has consistently shown its dedication to fighting hunger across the United States (which is why there were named as a Partner of the Year in 2021). With offices in Illinois, Texas, and New Jersey, they have collectively contributed 570,000 meals to food insecure communities.

Nelson Westerberg is also sponsoring our 2nd Annual Move 2 Fight Hunger Challenge, along with Weichert Mobility Workforce, to help raise awareness on childhood hunger. Sign up for the challenge, which runs throughout June, here!

In Illinois, 1.2 million people are considered food insecure, with nearly 500,000 individuals located in the Greater Chicago area. We are so thankful for the efforts of our movers to reduce the impact of hunger in their communities!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
