Nicole Cleary - Fighting Hunger and Food Waste Up North

August 5, 2016

039Our latest runner highlight comes from one of our members in the Frontier State of Alaska. Nicole Cleary of Alaska Terminals, an Atlas Van Lines agent, has taken matters in to her own hands (and feet) to ensure the success of the Move For Hunger program. This August, Nicole will run in the Anchorage Run Fest Half Marathon and has raised almost $2,000 in the process!

Nicole started her running career about 15 years ago and hasn't looked back since. By averaging about 100 miles a month on the trails between running, walking, and hiking, Nicole and her faithful training partner, Bella, spend a lot of time in the great outdoors. Unfortunately, like most athletes, Nicole suffered an injury that required surgery and was forced to take time off recently. But she has since healed and is now ready to turn her miles into meals in Anchorage!

AlaskaTerminalsTruckWrap-2Besides being a Team rockstar, Nicole is a tireless supporter of our mission. With Nicole's help, Alaska Terminals joined our fleet of Move For Hunger wrapped trucks in June. The company was also honored as our top Atlas agent in 2015. In addition, Nicole and Alaska Terminals were featured by the local Anchorage news for their dedication to fighting hunger and food waste in the Frontier State.

THANK YOU NICOLE FOR YOUR CONTINUED SUPPORT - HAVE A GREAT RACE!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
