New Jersey Movers Donate 11,000+ LBS. of Food to the Community FoodBank of NJ

April 25, 2017

On April 20, five of our moving partners from New Jersey arrived at the Community FoodBank of New Jersey (CFBNJ) headquarters in Hillside, NJ, to donate the food they had been collecting over the past two months.

Earlier this spring, the New Jersey Warehousemen & Movers Association (NJWMA) encouraged their members to host food drives in their respective communities. All Season Movers, an Atlas agent; Lowy’s Moving Service, a Wheaton agent; Ridgewood Moving Services, a Bekins agent; Simonik Transportation & Warehousing Group; and Sinclair Moving & Storage, all agreed to a friendly competition to see who could collect the most non-perishable food.

One by one, each of the movers had its donations weighed, and CFBNJ announced that 11,455 pounds of non-perishable food was collected! That is enough to provide about 9,500 meals for individuals in need.

“Our Food Frenzy Event was a great opportunity for Movers to show their willingness to help the local communities,” said Bob Russo, Executive Director of the NJWMA. “Thank you to Move For Hunger, the Community FoodBank of New Jersey, and our participating movers for making this event a success.”

CFBNJ first opened in 1975, and more recently they became a member of Feeding America, the largest food bank network in the nation. Today CFBNJ serves 18 of the 21 counties of New Jersey, distributing over 43 million pounds of food in 2016 alone.

Over 1 million people are food insecure in New Jersey, including 1 in 6 children. We'd like to extend our sincerest thanks to CBFNJ, NJWMA, All Season Movers, Lowy’s Moving Service, Ridgewood Moving Services, Simonik Transportation & Warehousing Group, and Sinclair Moving & Storage for your
commitment to addressing
this great need.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
