NALC "Stamp Out Hunger" Food Drive 2013

National Association of Letter Carriers Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive 2013

nalc stamp out hunger 2013_slider The 21st annual National Letter Carriers Food Drive is Saturday, May 11, and more than 1,400 NALC branches in just about every city, state and territory will have letter carriers, family members and thousands of volunteers out and about to help collect, sort and distribute the cans, boxes and jars of non-perishable food items left in bags next to customers’ mailboxes. The NALC’s effort is the nation’s largest one-day food-collection drive. In fact, the second Saturday in May was specifically chosen for the annual event. Pantry shelves filled up through winter-holiday generosity are often bare or nearly so by late spring—a sad reflection of the reality that widespread hunger in America is a tough problem to solve. Also, school meal programs typically do not continue operation during summer months. Don't forget to donate this saturday! This year Move For Hunger is playing an even bigger role in the NALC Food Drive! We have more than a dozen moving companies who will help food banks all across the US, assiting with the delivery of thousands of pounds of nonperishable food.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
