Karen Dickens, president of Colorado Hi-Tec Moving & Storage, a Wheaton agent, recently reflected on the company's mission to reduce food insecurity in the Denver community. Nearly 90,000 people, including 1 in 6 children, in Denver County face hunger. As a socially responsible businesswoman, Karen invests energy into alleviating this problem on a daily basis.
Karen remembers that joining the Move For Hunger network in 2010 was a no-brainer, since asking their customers to donate their non-perishable food was a simple addition to their existing routine. The Colorado Hi-Tec team loved the idea that all the logistics were handled behind the scenes and that all they needed was an address and time to drop off boxes and pick up food.
As a moving company, delivering non-perishable food to the Food Bank of the Rockies is easy, yet, it leaves a great impact: It's estimated that every 1.2 pounds of food donated provides one meal for someone in need. Having donated over 30,000 pounds of food (25,000 meals) throughout the years, Colorado Hi-Tec is not shy about fighting hunger within their community. Not only do they rescue unwanted food during moves, but they regularly provide materials and transportation for food drives happening in the Denver area.
Karen highlighted the importance of these food rescues and food drives during the summer months, as there is lower access to food among households with children during the summer than other times of the year. When school ends, so do affordable school breakfasts and lunches. Low-income households are then left to rely on food assistance, specifically, food banks and food pantries. Colorado Hi-Tec has already begun to step up their efforts to help meet the demand. A team of runners/walkers raised $2,300 for Team Move For Hunger at the Colfax Marathon 5K, and, on Memorial Day, Colorado Hi-Tec rescued more than 8,000 lbs. of food and beverages from the Boulder Bolder 10K Classic. Karen believes that Colorado Hi-Tec has the potential to collect a ton of food from their clients over the next few months, as the summer is the busiest time of year in the moving industry.
If you'd like to fight summer hunger in your own community, then we can help you get started!
