966443_460319054042356_1197585043_oFive Star Moving & Storage of Sparks, NV first joined Move For Hunger in 2009. At that time, our organization was just beginning to mobilize the relocation industry to put food on the tables of the less fortunate.  We were young organization, full of big ideas but lacking important industry partnerships. Five Star was one of the first companies to support our mission, and they remain just as dedicated to our cause today.

Whether promoting us on social media or helping us network at industry conferences, Five Star is extremely enthusiastic about Move For Hunger.  They308630_201234173284180_2024961995_n believe in our mission to strengthen America’s food banks, and they put their money where their mouth is by working tirelessly to strengthen their own local food bank, the Food Bank of Northern Nevada. Five Star has delivered an incredible 6,129 lbs. of food – enough to feed over 5,000 hungry individuals in their community.

When it comes to educating their customers about local hunger issues, Five Star has been consistent in spreading 549614_351417524932510_688825220_nawareness and collecting donations during the moving process. In addition to these daily activities, Five Star has teamed up with local businesses to hold creative food drives, like the Flower Bucket Food Drive and the Dentist Food Drive. Finally, Five Star deserves applause for their participation in two NALC food drives, for which they hauled a whopping 5,000 lbs. of food for their neighbors in need.

For four years, Five Star has played an indispensable role in the fight against hunger in northern Nevada. Congratulations to our Mover of the Month, Five Star Moving & Storage of Sparks, Nevada!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
