Mover Highlights: How Do YOU Move For Hunger?

July 30, 2015

2013-06-30_18.38.12_t607Everyone knows that moving companies are good at moving and storage – but we, here at Move For Hunger, know that what movers are really good at is helping make a difference in their community. Our network is made up of more than 600 amazing companies across North America who fight hunger in their towns every day. Together, you have collected more than 5 million pounds of food – helping feed the nearly 50 million Americans struggling to find their next meal. Truly awesome job, guys!

Since 2009, Move For Hunger has worked with moving companies to reduce food waste and fight hunger. On a daily basis, our mover members use their resources and expertise to make a difference in their local communities. Our mover members offer to collect food donations from their customers to donate to their local food bank, but this isn’t the only way that they fight hunger! Many movers volunteer or host events, including food drives and fundraisers in their communities, however, some movers have gone above and beyond to make a difference in the fight against hunger.

Crown Relocations - ChicagoIn addition to collecting food donations from their clients, Crown Relocations in Chicago, an agent of Wheaton Worldwide, who was selected as the March 2015 Mover of the Month, regularly participates in food rescues from local business in their community including Wal-mart, Caputo’s Fresh Market, and Jewl-Osco, where unsold food that would be normally thrown away is picked up and dropped off at the Glen Ellyn Food Pantry in Glen Ellyn, Illinois. In a single food rescue, Crown Relocations is able to deliver over 1,000 pounds of food to the food bank. Combining these food rescues with their regular client collections, Crown Relocations has been able to collect over 53,904 pounds of food, to date, for those in need.

“The team at Crown Relocations is honored to be part of such a great cause. We’re always eager to find new ways to have a positive impact on our community and help those in need,” said Jamison Roudabush, General Manager of Crown Relocations in Chicago. Move For Hunger applauds this creative initiative, which allows for movers to be involved with their local business, and help those in need!

A+ MovingWhen moving clients in apartment complexes, A+ Moving and Storage of Fayetteville, North Carolina, an agent of Wheaton Worldwide, puts collection boxes in a communal area to encourage food donations from the entire complex. This innovative take on a food drive provides a great opportunity to collect additional food when clients are moving! By simply placing collection boxes in the apartment complexes, A+ has been able to collect nearly 1500 pounds of food for the Second Harvest Food Bank of Southeast North Carolina. “It’s such an easy way to collect more food since we are already on site moving the customer,” explains Jerry Hare, President of A+ Moving and Storage. “The whole crew feels good to know that we are feeding our neighbors and making a real impact on hunger in our community.”

White Glove_smlWhite Glove Moving, Storage & Delivery in Vero Beach, Florida is also highly involved in their community and was chosen as the September 2014 Mover of the Month. For the past two summers, White Glove has collaborated with other local businesses in their community to hold two to three week-long food drives. Inspired by what they learned during a volunteer shift at their local food bank, they wanted to make a difference and educate others about increased hunger among children in the summertime, when they are away from subsidized lunch programs in schools. The town-wide food drive is simple: White Glove delivers food donation boxes to over a dozen local business to serve as collection points. Once the food drive ends, White Gloves collects the boxes and brings them to their local food bank, Treasure Coast Food Bank in Ft. Pierce.

White Glove_sml2In addition to the annual summer food drive, White Glove participates in the annual NALC food drive, “Stamp Out Hunger.” Due to their efforts with the food drive this summer, White Glove was able to collect over 8,000 pounds of food for those in need. Anna Valencia-Tillery, Vice President of Marketing at White Glove Moving, Storage & Delivery in Vero Beach comments, "Its tremendous to see the level of community involvement - it feels outstanding to play a role in helping fight hunger in our community."

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
