Move For Hunger’s Network steps up to deliver over 195,000 meals to food banks across the nation during the NALC Stamp Out Hunger Drive

June 13, 2023

The Annual National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive provides essential nourishment to those in need. This year, Move For Hunger joined the fight for the eighth year and transported nearly 235,000 lbs of food donations, providing over 195,000 meals to those in need across the country.

During the Stamp Out Hunger campaign, letter carriers collect food donations from households along their postal routes. Residents are encouraged to place non-perishable food items in a bag near their mailbox for the carriers to collect.

The nation's largest one-day food drive is held in the beginning of the summer due to it being the hardest time for parents to provide meals for their children. Without access to daily meals through their schools, millions of children go hungry during the summer

Sixteen movers in Move For Hunger’s mover network participated on May 13 by picking up donations from their local post office and delivering them to food banks and pantries.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
