Move For Hunger Spotlight: Jordan McNamara and Bloomington Relocation Systems Inc.

October 30, 2015

Jordan McNamara has been with Bloomington Relocation Systems Inc., an agent of North American Van Lines, located in Normal, Illinois, since their origin four years ago. Bloomington Relocation Systems Inc. has been a member of Move For Hunger since January 2012 -- and Jordan has been a part of the entire process, transporting goods and boxes from food drives to food pantries, helping the company collect a grand total of 9,300 pounds of non perishables since 2012.

"I don't do it for the recognition but to help people in need," says McNamara, 28 of Lexington Illinois, whose volunteer time and efforts along with others at the company have gained Bloomington Relocation Systems Inc. much respect and the title of Mover of the Month in March of 2014. Bloomington Relocation Systems Inc. is an exemplary member of Move For Hunger: they do an excellent job at relaying our message of food donation to each and every one of their customers, ensuring that we receive maximum support from everyone, which is what earned them another respected title as the North American Van Lines Mover of 2014!

Each packer is instructed to enlighten all customers about food insecurity around the world and ask them to take part in the movement by donating any foods they plan to leave behind.

"We do this everyday and take a bunch of food in at the end of the month, it's better than a single food drive," says McNamara, "you feel proud with what one person donates, you feel proud that there are still good people out there."

The Move For Hunger movement has not only affected the company, but also McNamara personally, he's admitted to becoming more conscience of his food waste. "Last year I cleaned out my pantry before going shopping and donated all of my food, I even take my friend's unwanted foods and give it to the cause."

McNamara and Bloomington Relocation Systems Inc. donate their food to the Crossroads Chapel, in Decatur, Illinois. "We're just happy to be affiliated, here we take it to a local church," according to McNamara, "they love us when we call and say we're bringing food!" That's a lot of food that the Crossroads Chapel has received and been able to disperse among those in their community in need -- no wonder they are happy to hear from Jordan and his team!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
