Move For Hunger Celebrates 50 Million Meals Delivered, Tackling Food Insecurity Amid Growing Challenges

May 1, 2025

Move For Hunger has officially delivered 50 million meals to people experiencing hunger across North America! As a national nonprofit dedicated to fighting food insecurity and reducing food waste, this is not just a number—it’s a goal we’ve been climbing towards faster and faster each year.

This accomplishment underscores our commitment to hunger relief over the last 15 years while highlighting the growing need for food assistance. And while we’re proud of this achievement, it would take 51 billion meals to feed every American facing hunger for a year - a sobering reminder of the work still ahead.

The State of Hunger in 2025

Right now, 47 million Americans, including 1 in 5 children, are living with food insecurity, meaning they can’t always guarantee where their next meal is coming from. Rising living costs, USDA cuts to food banks and school meals, and the threat of reduced funding to programs such as SNAP are only making things worse.

Food banks are stretched thin. Families are faced with impossible choices. Millions of pounds of food are needlessly thrown out every year. And that’s exactly why Move For Hunger exists.

The Critical Need For Food Rescue

Since its founding in 2009, Move For Hunger has built a nationwide food rescue network, working with more than 1,250 moving companies and 2,500 Multifamily properties to recover and transport surplus food to food banks across all 50 states and Canada. What started as a simple idea, encouraging people to donate their nonperishable food when they move, evolved into a multi-faceted hunger relief operation.

In 2024 alone, the organization delivered 15 million meals which is more than in 2022 and 2023 combined. Meanwhile, looming threats to programs such as Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) puts millions of families at risk, making food recovery efforts and a response to the growing demand for local food assistance even more critical.

50 Million Meals and Counting

This milestone is the result of a collective effort between Move For Hunger’s transportation network, corporate sponsors, community partners, and volunteers.

When safety nets shrink and prices climb, food rescue becomes a lifeline. Every box of pasta, every can of soup, every rescued meal means one less family going without. The reality is 13.5% of American households live in food insecurity, without access to reliable, fresh food.

Every day millions of people are struggling to put food on the table. Food banks across the country continue to see an increased demand as inflation, supply chain issues, and potential funding cuts put pressure on already strained resources.

“Fifty million meals is an incredible milestone, but it’s not the finish line,” said Adam Lowy, Founder & Executive Director of Move For Hunger. “Food insecurity is a year-round crisis, and with ongoing threats to federal assistance programs, our work is more important than ever. We will continue to expand our impact, recover more food, and ensure that nutritious meals reach the people who need them most.”

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
