More Food Drive Themes!

October 10, 2016

Organizing and hosting a food drive may seem daunting, but try out these fun themes to make it more engaging and fun for everyone!

Special Dress Day: At work or in class, have students or employees “pay” to wear certain attire with non-perishable food items. (casual dress, jean day, t-shirt day)

Is dinner ready?: Collect combinations of food that can be used to prepare a full dinner meal (ex: spaghetti noodles & sauce, beans, rice, salsa, taco shells, and Mexican seasonings)FeaturedImage_FOODDRIVEtwo

Kids for Kids food drive or share your snacks: Have students collect foods for other kids. (ex: healthy after school snacks, juice, granola bar, applesauce, fruit cups, crackers, peanut butter)

Fill the Bag: Provide a bag for each employee or student to fill with non-perishable food items.

MEAT the need: Hold a canned meat drive (tuna, spam, chicken).

Wash away hunger: Have a car wash where the price of the wash is a donation of nonperishable food items.

No Show Picnic: Have a picnic where no food is served, but instead is collected.

Food Theme Days: Have themed days so everyone brings in a different item each day of the week. Macaroni Monday, Tuna Tuesday, Whole Grain Wednesday, Tomato Pasta Sauce Thursday, Fruit cup Friday.

Together we “can”: Bring in canned goods.

Price of Admission: Have an event and charge an admission of a non-perishable food item.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
