Merchants Moving & Storage Turns a Truck Into a Call to Action

April 26, 2017

Boise, ID Merchants Moving & Storage, an agent of Atlas Van Lines, has wrapped one of its moving trucks to encourage the local community to donate food when they move. Nearly 15% of Idahoans, including 1 in 5 children, struggle with food insecurity. As a proud partner of Move For Hunger, Merchants Moving & Storage offers to pick up any unopened, non-perishable food items from its customers, year-round, to distribute to local food banks. To date, Merchants Moving & Storage has delivered more than 13,000 pounds of food to the Idaho Food Bank – providing more than 10,800 meals to their neighbors in need.

“More than 240,000 people in Idaho face hunger each and every day. This truck will create awareness about the problem and serve as a call to action for people who want to help,” says Adam Lowy, Executive Director of Move For Hunger. “We’re proud to be partners with companies like Merchants Moving & Storage and Atlas Van Lines, who are dedicated to making a difference in the communities they serve.”

“Move For Hunger is such an amazing organization and our team is proud to be a part of it,” said T.J. Grove, General Manager of Merchants Moving & Storage. “This wrapped truck will help advertise an important program, and is a testament to how determined we are to making a difference within our community.”

Through the generous support of partners like Merchants Moving & Storage and Atlas Van Lines, Move For Hunger can continue to help the nearly 50 million Americans struggling to find their next meal.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
