September 25, 2015

Move For Hunger works with an extensive network of moving and relocation companies who each play a part in fighting hunger in their local community. For the month of August, Move For Hunger would like to recognize Merchants Moving & Storage, Inc., and agent for Atlas Van Lines, as the Mover of the Month!

Since 1944, Merchants Moving & Storage Inc. has prided itself on hard work and dedication to keeping their customers happy. This incredible work ethic has extended to their dedication to fight hunger, where they are always excited to come up with new and exciting ways to consistently fight hunger and raise awareness about hunger in the local community!

In Idaho, over 1,600,00 individuals, including one in four children do not know where their next meal is coming from. Merchants Moving & Storage, Inc. has partnered with Move For Hunger in 2012, and has been able to donate over 11,873 pounds of food to the Idaho Food Bank, providing meals to those who need it the most.

Most recently, Merchants Moving & Storage, Inc. organized a "Fill-A-Truck" food drive in support of Hunger Action Month, where non perishable food items and donations were collected. In just four hours, Merchants Moving & Storage, Inc. collected over 1,588 pounds of food!

Move For Hunger would like to thank Merchants Moving & Storage, Inc. for everything they have done to fight hunger in their local community. Congratulations and keep up the great work!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
