May’s Community of the Month Goes to The Sovereign at Regent Square

June 10, 2021

Every month, Move for Hunger spotlights a community that shines in their fight against hunger. The May 2021 Community of the Month is The Sovereign at Regent Square!

Earlier this year, The Sovereign at Regent Square, a Windsor Communities property, took part in Windsor Communities Spread the Love Food Drive and Fundraiser, donating 300 pounds of food, or 250 meals to Houston Food Bank. The purpose of this campaign is to collect as much peanut butter as possible since it lasts a long time and is often a food bank-requested item. Overall, the Windsor Communities properties collected nearly 3,000 pounds of food and fundraised $3,436, totalling almost 11,200 meals.

Thanks to Ward North American- Houston, part of Ward North American, a North American Van Lines agent, for delivering the food. They won Mover of the Month this past April and for good reason; since they joined Move For Hunger in August 2019, they have transported more than 50,000 pounds of food, or more than 42,300 meals.

Texas as a whole has a food insecurity rate of 14.1% meaning 1 in 7 people are going hungry. In the Houston area alone, nearly 1 million people are going hungry, 365,370 of whom are children.

We are happy to work with The Sovereign at Regent Square, Windsor Properties, and Ward North American and are thankful for their decision to support their community.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
