Making Time to Make A Difference

September 27, 2016

As anyone who's ever worked in the relocation industry will tell you, summer is the busiest time of year. The increased workload hasn't stopped our partners from making time to give back to their communities. Since May, our moving partners have delivered over 473,000 pounds of food - that's over 394,000 meals - to food banks and pantries across the United States and Canada. Here's a closer look at just a few of the events they've been involved in this summer:

marksmovingandstoragefillatruckseptember2016Mark's Moving & Storage, an Arpin agent, filled a truck with over 1,000 pounds of food to support the Needham Community Council Food Pantry in Massachusetts.

White Glove Moving, Storage & Delivery partnered with over a dozen businesses in the Vero Beach, Florida area to host a summer food drive.

Montway Auto Transport and Movers Specialty Service were our first members to hold "Can the CEO" food drives.

NorthStar Moving collected over 7,000 pounds of food during their Let's Send Hunger Packing drive.

Dunmar Moving Systems of Roanoke teamed up with a Harley Davidson dealership in Lynchburg, Virginia to collect over 600 pounds of food over Labor Day weekend.

Crown Relocations of Los Angeles co-sponsored a food drive with the Huntington Beach Public Library.

Mordue Moving & Storage, an Arpin agent, picked up over 400 pounds of food from the Morton Pumpkin Festival's food drive and delivered it to the Midwest Food Bank in Peoria.mortonpumkinfestival2016jimmaloofmorduemoving-4

Hopkins & Sons, an Atlas agent, picked-up and delivered nearly 2,500 pounds of food from the Girls on the Run 5k food drive in Wilmington, Delaware.

Gentle Giant Moving Company of Philadelphia gleaned over 8,000 pounds of fresh corn from farms in Southern New Jersey.

A number of our partners once again volunteered their time to assist with the NALC's Stamp Out Hunger food drive.

Thank you to everyone who played a part in helping us collect so much food this summer!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
