M. Dyer & Sons: May 2015 Mover of the Month

June 18, 2015

Move For Hunger recognizes a company each month that stands out in their efforts to fight hunger. For May, Move For Hunger’s Mover of the Month is M. Dyer & Sons of Pearl City, Hawaii. A partner of Move For Hunger since 2013, M. Dyer & Sons is one of the best-known and respected moving and storage companies in Hawaii. They believe in the importance of helping their neighbors, and as a result, have donated significant time and resources to help in the fight against hunger.

Over the years, M. Dyer & Sons has demonstrated themselves to be of our strongest and most consistent partners at Move For Hunger. Their commitment to reducing food waste and fighting hunger in the local community is self-evident; delivering over 1,600 pounds of food to the Hawaii Food Bank in Honolulu. In May alone, they were able to collect over 160 pounds of food. This is a huge feat to be noted and celebrated.

The easiest way to help fight hunger is to offer to donate your customers’ their unwanted non-perishable food to local food banks and pantries. Throughout the year, M. Dyer & Sons have regularly offered this service and, as a result, has helped keep a steady stream of food going to those in need. In addition to collecting from their customers when they move, M. Dyer & Sons have reached out to the wider community to join the fight against hunger: establishing a neighborhood drop-off collection location in their office, accepting food donations for the Hawaii Foodbank year-round.

One in six Americans is affected by food insecurity -- forced to choose between paying bills or buying food -- including nearly 200,000 people in Hawaii, alone. M. Dyer & Sons’ consistent efforts to affect change in their community, have helped reduce hunger in Hawaii and serve as a role model to us all. We are delighted to recognize their work with our Mover of the Month Award.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
