Semi-Annual Craft Beer and Food Truck Festival Supports Fight To End Hunger

The LivingSocial Beerfest brings together thousands of  beer enthusiasts for a celebration of domestic and imported lagers, ales, stouts and IPAs at the Half-Street Fairgrounds in Washington D.C. Thanks to our friends at LivingSocial, we were invited to spread word about our organization's mission and raise funds to support our fight against hunger.

We had our now-famous Big Beer pong setup throughout the day as well as food drive collection boxes to collect donations for the less fortunate of the D.C. metro area. Many in attendance were shocked to learn that D.C. has the second highest food insecurity rate for children in the entire country.

In fact, nearly 30% of all children in Washington D.C. live in food-insecure households and much of the city is designated as a 'food desert'-an area or neighborhood that lacks access to affordable and nutritious food.

Our local mover, Crown Relocations, was generous to donate their resources to transport the food collected to the local food bank.

A big thank you to all that donated food, visited the Move For Hunger booth and of course LivingSocial for providing us the opportunity to spread awareness to thousands of people in attendance.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
