LIM College Patched the Hole on Hunger

December 10, 2014

LIM College Food Drive helped tailor the lives of those who are struggling with hunger in New York City. To many this remarkable city is the place that made their dreams comes true, however it is also the home to many residents who don’t know where to find their next meal.

Amanda Tedeschi exemplifies how just one person can make a huge difference in their community if you put your mind to it. By using her resources as an alumni of LIM College, she was able to piece together a powerful food drive to help those in need. She rallied up her peers, past professors and faculty, current students, and community members to help weave hunger out of the city.

The event was able to collect 1,000 pounds of food in just four weeks! With Thanksgiving around the corner, the holidays in sight, and the winter months approaching, many families and individuals are relying on food banks for their nutrition. It’s people like Amanda and the members of LIM College who give hope to these families this season.

More than 2.7 million people in New York live on incomes that put them at risk of hunger. Thirty-four percent of those in need are children. But thanks to all that participated in this food drive, those statistics are sure to decline.

Thank you to Amanda, LIM College, and all who donated for working together to help repair hunger in the city!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
