Lackawanna College Collects 87 Pounds of Food For Friends of the Poor!

November 20, 2015

Students from Lackawanna College in Pennsylvania have recently concluded their month long food and clothing drive where they collected about 87 pounds of food! With the help of Bekins A-1 Movers, the students donated enough food to provide more than 70 meals to Friends of the Poor, a local community pantry.

Lackawanna

This drive was initiated by Dawn Hernandez, a student who was motivated to help people in her community who were facing hunger. With more than 30,000 people suffering from food insecurity in Lackawanna County alone, Dawn and her fellow classmates knew they had to make a difference. But, the generosity didn't end there!

The unstoppable team collected toiletries, hygiene products, and winter clothing. In addition, Dawn's class at Lackawanna College volunteered to feed the homeless at Community Intervention Center in Scranton, PA. This team is full of ideas to help their community so stay tuned for upcoming events!

Everyone at Move For Hunger would like to extend a HUGE thank you to Dawn Hernandez, Lackawanna Community College, and Bekins A-1 Movers of Wilkes-Barre for your determination to make a difference!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
