January Mover of the Month: Armstrong Moving & Storage of Toronto

March 16, 2016

Each month, we highlight one of the moving companies in our network for their extraordinary commitment to fighting hunger in their community. For the month of January, we are delighted to announce that Armstrong Moving & Storage of Toronto is our Mover of the Month!

Sometimes a small group of people can make a huge difference. Here at Move for Hunger, we love to recognize movers who perform an outstanding job and dedicate themselves to making a difference in their community. Armstrong Moving and Storage of Toronto is one of these companies that has proven time and time again that their heart goes out to those in need. All it takes is two ingredients: passion and creative thinking.

We spoke to Adam Harwood, the Vice President of Operations at the company, who has been at the forefront of change. With his help, the company has collected over 30,000 pounds of food to help feed the hungry in their community. That amounts to 25,000 meals!

Adam explains, “[I like] the satisfaction of being able to help people out.” His team has definitely pooled the resources to make this happen. Adam’s company works with local businesses throughout the area to collect surplus food that would otherwise go unsold and deliver it to food banks. Not only does this help those in need of food, but it also curbs food waste. About a third of the world’s annual food production is discarded for reasons such as supermarkets over-ordering and imperfect packaging.
Adam’s favorite memory from this initiative was when he worked with a vendor who had accidentally ordered too much rice. Rather than let it go to waste, his company sent a truck down to pick up the food and transport it to a local food bank. “We actually had to get redirected to another food bank because they couldn’t store it all!” he mentioned enthusiastically.

Armstrong Movers works closely with Move for Hunger to help with food drives in the Toronto area. The crew mentions Move for Hunger’s food recycling program to every client they transport. This has led to the incredible amount of food that they have collected to date. Move for Hunger congratulates Armstrong Moving and Storage of Toronto for being selected as our January Mover of the Month! We appreciate all the hard work and dedication that has been proudly displayed and have faith that it will continue into the future.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
