Invictus Charter Prep Students Give Back To The Community!

February 3, 2016

In an inspirational effort to give back to their community before the holidays, the Invictus Charter Prep School of Brooklyn, NY organized a food drive event. With the help of Move For Hunger, the school hosted a drive from November 9th to December 1st. The students donated a sum total of 82 pounds which equates almost 70 meals for those fighting hunger.

This event was made possible by A-1 First Class Moving, an Atlas agent, who generously provided the supplies and transportation for the food drive. At the end of the drive, A-1 First Class Moving donated the collection to the Island Harvest food bank in Mineola to benefit those of the Nassau county. Move For Hunger is extremely appreciative of their volunteering of time and supplies.

Over 93,000 people, including 43,840 children, in Nassau county do not know where their next meal is coming from. The staff at Move For Hunger applauds Invictus Charter Prep School for their dedication to advocating this fight against hunger. It is amazing to see children volunteer their time to help other children in need. We thank you for helping build a strong foundation for a hunger-free future.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
