An Interview with Anna Valencia Tillery of White Glove Moving, Storage & Delivery

July 20, 2016

Around the time Anna Valencia Tillery was hired as Vice President of Marketing for White Glove Moving, Storage, & Delivery, she attended a presentation by the Treasure Coast Food Bank at her local Chamber of Commerce. Anna learned about Move For Hunger during the event and, within hours, White Gloving Moving was enrolled in the program.

White Glove Moving, Storage & Delivery always asks its customers to donate their food when the move,  WhiteGloveMovingStorageAndDelivery_logobut the company also hosts two annual food drives: one in the summer and one during the holiday season. Their most recent summer food drive provided almost 1,300 meals to the food bank during the time of year when it needs help the most.

"The biggest benefit we get is the satisfaction in knowing how many families we are helping," Anna said. "The gratitude we receive from each member of the food bank's staff is very encouraging and hearing what this does for the folks they serve warms our hearts."

In addition, White Glove has also assisted with Stamp Out Hunger, a massive annual food drive organized by The National Association of Letter Carriers.

"We have been able to be a big help with Stamp Out Hunger," Anna noted. "We use our facility to store boxes, our trucks are filled with food during drive, and our men to help load and unload the trucks at various local food kitchens. It is a really busy day, but seeing hundreds of volunteers all get together, break bread, and sort food - it's one of our favorite days of the year."

WhiteGloveJuly2016She said being a part of the Move For Hunger program has strengthened her crew's connection with the community. Over a dozen local organizations partnered with White Glove on this summer's food drive.

"The White Glove name has become synonymous with Move for Hunger," she said. "Even various homeowners, condo associations, and timeshare locations have come to us to help repurpose their unused, non-perishable food items. Our food drives are gaining more and more momentum. Businesses enjoy the ease in being able to participate. We pick up and deliver every box; all they have to do is fill it. There is so much to be gained just by creating awareness."

Since that serendipitous day in 2013, White Glove Moving, Storage & Delivery has delivered 14,871 lbs of food – that’s the equivalent of 12,392 meals. Anna was unaware of the total, but was proud of everything she and her colleagues have accomplished.

"It is a very gratifying feeling to know our team can make such a difference."

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
