How A-1 Movers Helped reMOVE Hunger!

January 21, 2016

A-1 Movers is unstoppable! The Atlas van line recently completed a fundraising food drive event that made 2015 go down in volunteering history!

A-1 Movers, an agent of Atlas, of Superior, WI completed their third annual food drive! This incredible one-month event ran throughout the entirety of December. A-1 Movers was fortunate enough to partner with the grocery store chain, Super One Foods. Super One Foods was generous enough to host the drive at their 10 locations across the Twin Ports. A-1 Movers placed bins and even parked trailers and trucks at these spots for the community to donate. super

In a creative and charitable donation idea, Super One Foods created $5 goodie bags that contained about $10 worth varying food necessities available for purchase by the customer to donate to the collection.

Collectively, the movers collected a groundbreaking 48,000 pounds of food -- 40,000 meals! At the end of December, the food was donated to the Second Harvest Northern Lakes Food Bank in Duluth, MN to benefit St. Louis County and neighboring communities.

In St. Louis County, there are 25,170 individuals who are fighting hunger, including 7,640 children. A-1 Mover's event could provide close to two meals per food insecure individual in this county. The staff at Move For Hunger would like to applaud the rewarding initiative taken by A-1 Movers and Super One Foods. The intense dedication, outstanding creativity, and communal altruism shown by everyone involved is truly an inspiration for all. Move For Hunger would like to thank everyone who donated for making this event such a success.

Keep up the good work! We look forward to see what is possible next year!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
