The Hoop Bowl: How North Carolina Fights Hunger!

December 2, 2015

blogpostimagedecThis past week in Greensboro, NC a team of hunger advocates got together to discuss how they can successfully reach their goals of providing healthy meals to families and individuals in the community at least once a week and promote awareness in Greensboro, where hunger is prevalent. Their discussions produced The Hoop Bowl.

The Hoop Bowl was imagined by a local food pantry called The Good Pantry. It's is not your ordinary food drive; this food drive asks for organic and non-GMO food only. When most people hear of a food drive and want to contribute, they get the cheapest items in the store, not thinking about how unhealthy it may be. This food drive is to help make people aware of the potentially dangerous chemicals and additives in the foods they are digesting and also help reduce hunger in the community.

Volunteers have gathered together to strategically plan events to help promote the food drive in the community - FYI: it's going on right now! - and the potential dangers of non-organic and GMO foods. Volunteers are going around to local businesses and health stores to see if they can place collection boxes for the food drive at their establishments or if they are willing to sponsor or donate.

To make the food drive a little more interesting, students from North Carolina A&T State University and University of North Carolina at Greensboro are competing to see which school can collect the most food. If you would like to learn more about the organization for this food drive or want to donate please visit http://www.viyc.org/#!garden/c1a4e, your donations are truly appreciated.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
