High School Students Prepare Meals to Help Stop Hunger in Other Countries

February 12, 2016

nonperishablefooditems_smallIn Fairfax, VA, Paul VI Catholic High School students are preparing to organize their Stop Hunger Now meal packaging event. Two years ago, two students, Stephanie and Teresa Neves started the Stop Hunger Now event to promote awareness about world hunger among their fellow students.

At this event, several hundred volunteers get together and are seated in rows with tables in a large room. They make their own assembly line by having one row put rice, soy, and dehydrated vegetables into plastic bags and the next row will finish the bags off by adding flavor packets with vitamins. They then weigh and seal the packages and put them into cardboard boxes before putting them on the trucks. After 1,000 meals are packed, they ring a gong to keep the excitement going in the volunteers.

Last year, they had 200 students volunteer and together, they packaged more than 35,000 meals. March 11th, they want to raise $10,210, which would be about 200 more meals packed than last year.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
