Gold's Gym Helps Fight Hunger in DC, MD, and VA

February 1, 2016

Gold's Gym not only helps others live a healthy lifestyle by encouraging exercise, but helps feed people in need as well. There are nearly 50 million Americans who don't have enough to eat, that's 1 in 7 people, so the DC-area Gold's Gym locations decided to come together and make a difference.

Thirty Gold's Gym locations in DC, MD, VA held a food drive from November 16, 2015- January 1, 2016 and together they collected a whopping 3,489 lbs of food! That's enough food to provide more than 2,900 meals!

Move for Hunger extends a huge thank you to everyone who participated in this event. On behalf of the Move for Hunger Staff, I would like to thank Gold's Gym for taking the initiative and pulling together to organize such a strong event; Interstate Moving & Storage,  Bargain Movers, and Paxton Vanlines Inc., an Atlas agent, for their generosity - providing supplies, manpower and transportation; and everyone in the DC area who donated and helped fight hunger!

If you and your gym would like to get involved, contact us so we can help you get started on your fight to end hunger.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
