Gentle Giant Phights Hunger at Rock 'n' Roll Philadelphia 1/2 Marathon & 5K

September 9, 2016

Everyone has been to a race at some point in their life. It is fun - you get to be outside and have a great time. However, ever notice how when the marathon is over there is always leftover food? Bottles of water, granola bars, and fruit among others. Well on Sunday, September 18th not at this marathon: Gentle Giant Moving Company will rescue all of the food at Rock 'n' Roll Half Marathon in Philadelphia. The event is not only a marathon but a chance to take action against hunger. September is Hunger Action Month, when food insecurity is brought to light. In Philadelphia more than 750,000 are struggling to find their next meal, this includes one out of seven children. It is a fabulous chance to help out the citizens of Philadelphia and become one step closer to beating hunger.

All rescued food will benefit Philabundance food bank in Philadelphia.

The half marathon & 5K will start on Sunday, September 18 at Eakins Oval, the parking lot in front of the Art Museum, 2600 Benjamin Franklin Parkway in the heart of Philadelphia at 7:30 A.M.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
