Front Porch Food Drives Collects Almost 2,000 lbs of Food

May 13, 2020

Never underestimate our kids because sometimes they go off and host a food drive that brings in nearly 2,000 lbs of food! Lucy Kinney of Naperville, Illinois hosted one of our very first Front Porch Food Drives.

She passed out bags all around her neighborhood and asked them to drop off a bag or box of food at her front door or text “Move For Hunger” to her so she’ll pick it up in front of their house. The neighborhood rallied behind the cause to donate 1,840 lbs of food (1,500 meals)!

Lucy got the assist from her mom who works for Boyer-Rosene Moving & Storage, a Bekins agent, who transported all of the food to a nearby homeless shelter, the Hesed House in Aurora.

While the food insecurity rate in Dupage County is relatively low at 5.9%, the county sits right outside of Chicago’s Cook County which is nearly double the food insecurity rate. The food comes at a much needed time when unemployment is skyrocketing, and it’s estimated that 17 million more Americans are going hungry because of the pandemic.

Boyer-Rosene Moving & Storage has worked with Move For Hunger on several events and has transported nearly 2,500 lbs (2,040 meals).

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
