Four Holiday Themed Food Drives

October 10, 2016

The holidays are almost here and now is a great time to hold a food drive. Festive themes can make people more excited to get involved.  Here are four holiday themes for you to use!

Reverse Advent Calendar Drive

familydinnerthanksgivingholidayfoodplatehappyMany families use an advent calendar to count down the days until Christmas. Encourage families to start a new tradition that helps the hungry! Give participants a Christmas-themed box and have them put one food item in it every day until December 25. Then, after the holiday, they can deliver it to a food bank. This theme is great for getting kids involved!

Fall Harvest Drive

Fall is a time where people love to gather and have fun. Host a fall Harvest Event with games and activities for children. Charge at least one food item for admission. This can also be a great event to teach kids about the importance of healthy foods.

Thanksgiving Meal Drive

Everyone has a favorite dish they look forward to at Thanksgiving. This year, host a food drive where people are encouraged to bring their favorite Thanksgiving foods. You can turn this one into a friendly competition to see which food is the most popular!

Halloween Costume Drive

Young and old get to dress up for this event. Host a Halloween costume contest at your food drive. All who donate at least one food item can participate. Create categories based on ages or categories and give a prize to the best costume!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
