The Fagala girls of Monroe, NC has done it again! And this time, it was bigger than ever!

From November 11, 2015 to November 30, 2015, the Fagala girls teamed up again with Move for Hunger to organize holiday food drives at Piedmont Middle School and Piedmont High School. Because of the incredible dedication and inspiring support of the girls and the entire Monroe community, the food drives collected an outstanding total of 8,269 pounds of food! That equates almost 7,000 meals for those in need in Union County. fagalafooddrivebox2

A special thanks goes out to Berger Allied of Charlotte, an Allied van line, who made this event possible by providing supplies and transportation to the drive!

The staff at Move for Hunger would like to extend a thank you and congratulations to the Fagala girls, the students of Piedmont Middle and High Schools, Berger Allied of Charlotte, and all those who donated food to the drive. We appreciate your advocation to the cause and commend your success! fagalafooddrivebox

In union county alone, there are 24,300 people facing food insecurity. Efforts like this set a precedent that will reduce that number!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
