Five of Our Favorite Fall Food Drives

December 13, 2016

Our network of movers helped us hold a record number of food drives this year, including more than 200 since October, alone. Here are five of our favorite food drives from this fall.

For the third year in a row, Bronxville High School and Middle School in New York partnered with Al’s Moving and Storage to hold a fall food drive. Students, teachers, and administrators were encouraged to donate non-perishable, Thanksgiving-themed food items to help provide meals for their neighbors in need in time for the holiday.

Thanks to their commitment to fighting hunger and the generosity of the Bronxville community, more than 350 pounds of food was collected – that’s the equivalent of 300 meals!

Connecticut Woman Collects 1,000 Pounds of Food in a Single Day!

Theresa Paulovic Food Drive 2016On November 19, Theresa Paulovic hosted her second annual Fill-A-Van food drive. Members of her community in Norwalk, CT were encouraged to bring non-perishable food items to her home in an effort to help provide meals for their neighbors in need.

During this one day event, she was able to collect more than 1,000 pounds of food – that equates to 830 meals for local families in need! Kaster Moving, an Atlas agent, made it possible by donating boxes for the collection and a van for the day.

City Transfer and Storage, an Atlas agent based in North Carolina, set a goal to collect 1,500 pounds of food during their three-week long food drive. Thanks to the generosity of their employees and members of the local community, they easily surpassed that total and collected nearly 1,900 pounds of non-perishable food. Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
