Feeling Swell Does it Again!

September 9, 2016

Following their first successful food drive in Lavallette, NJ, Brian and Eric Barr of Feeling Swell were back at it again, this time in nearby Bayhead.

Feeling Swell distributed empty bags to homes on August 19 and asked residents to fill them with non-perishable food.  They returned one week later and, thanks to the generosity of the Bayhead community, were able to personally deliver nearly 670 lbs of food to The FoodBank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties.

The two food drives Feeling Swell held this summer provided over 1,100 lbs of food, that's nearly 930 meals, to families in Monmouth and Ocean County. According to Feeding America, nearly 120,ooo people in the area face hunger; 1 in 7 children are unsure of when they will have their next meal. In the summer, when kids no longer have access to free or reduced-cost school meals, an even greater strain is placed on food banks. Thank you Feeling Swell for taking action and helping to provide meals for your neighbors in need!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
