Feed My Community of South Florida is making a huge difference in fighting hunger by putting together the largest food drive in South Florida community history. From September 9-15, 2013, over 25 South Palm Beach County agencies, organizations, schools and congregations will be collecting financial and in kind donations, as well as canned goods, dry rice and beans, and peanut butter.

With September being National Hunger Action Month, the food drive takes place at a great time to make hunger visible. Feed My Community is not only aiming to collect food supplies for local pantries, but also to "promote discussion and reflection and root causes of hunger in our communities and nation."

Donations collected will be brought to various food banks and pantries in the South Florida community by generous volunteers and Bekins of South Florida. Participating pantries include CROS Ministries, Jacobson Family Food Pantry, Boca Helping Hands, and the Palm Beach County Food Bank. Move For Hunger commends Feed My Community for their support to local food banks and the 212,000 people struggling with food insecurity in Palm Beach County.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
