Delivering Meals Across the Nation: Stamp Out Hunger 2024

May 24, 2024

For the ninth year, Move For Hunger joined the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) for the annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive.

During the nation’s largest one-day food drive, residents place non-perishable food items in a bag near their mailbox for carriers to collect on their postal routes. Without assistance from school lunch programs, over 20 million kids face hunger during the summer months. Donations are essential for local food banks and pantries to help food insecure families.

This year, over 20 of our transportation partners helped provide more than 226,000 meals to communities all over the U.S. Together we were able to transport over 271,000 lbs of food to banks and pantries across the country. We’re so grateful to have a network of partners who are committed to fighting hunger

Highlights from Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive 2024:

Our generous partner Allied transported the most pounds of food donations this year with Reebie Storage & Moving Co. of Franklin Park! They wrapped up Stamp Out Hunger 2024 by transporting 60,000 lbs of food to Loaves & Fishes Food Bank. This donation alone brought over 50,000 meals to the community of Naperville, IL.

Hopkins & Sons, Inc. transported over 37,600 lbs of food donations to the Food Bank of Delaware; bringing 31,000 meals to their local community.

In Florida, Chadwell Supply Company transported 28,500 lbs of food to an emergency care help organization, ECHO of Riverview. Gentle Giant Moving Company transported 14,410 lbs of food to Life Net 4 Families in Fort Lauderdale.

Up in New Jersey, Bekins’ Seacure Moving, INC transported 12,000 lbs of food to the Greater Tuckerton Food Pantry. Mayflower transported 11,996 lbs of donations with Sinclair Moving & Storage to the Food Bank of South Jersey. Just with these two transports we were able to bring over 19,900 meals to these communities!

Two of our partners in California helped transport food donations to the Community Action Partnership of Orange County Food Bank. Alexander’s Mobility Services transported 11,333 lbs of donations and Wheatons’ Daly Movers transported 9,838 lbs of food. With both of these transports, over 17,000 meals can now help feed the local community.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
