December 2016 Mover of the Month: Firefighting's Finest Moving & Storage

January 11, 2017

Each month, we highlight one of the moving companies in our network for their extraordinary commitment to fighting hunger in their community. We are excited to announce that Firefighting's Finest Moving & Storage is our Mover of the Month for December, 2016!

Firefighting's Finest Moving & Storage was one of the very first companies to join our program. The Fort Worth, Texas movers signed on way back in November of 2010 and their commitment to our cause has never wavered.

"Move For Hunger has become a passion for our company," said David Peterson, Firefighting's Finest Moving & Storage's Senior Moving Consultant/Community Outreach Coordinator. "We see that there's a need, and we want to do as much as we can. It's just part of who we are now."

During the holiday season, Firefighting's Finest Moving & Storage worked with the Tarrant Area Food Bank to assist with 25 food drives in and around Fort Worth. Those events brought in a combined 39,500 pounds of food - that's the equivalent of 32,900 meals.

"Schools, churches, and businesses all hold food drives in the fall," Peterson said. "Our contact at the food bank lets us know where they need us to pick up from, and we just work it into our schedule. It's easy for us."

Their dedication to fighting hunger during the season of giving even extended to a holiday itself. On Thanksgiving, Firefighting’s Finest had a moving truck stationed at the Texas Motor Speedway for the 8th annual Grub Run, an unconventional 5K where runners have the chance to race on the same track as their favorite NASCAR drivers. The race also gives participants an opportunity to fight hunger in their community, as everyone is encouraged to bring 5 cans of non-perishable food. So before sitting down to a holiday meal with their loved ones later that day, members of the Firefighting's Finest crew spent Thanksgiving morning collecting donations for their neighbors in need. The team loaded over 7,300 pounds of food onto the truck that day – enough to provide more than 6,000 meals.

And that's not all! Firefighting's Finest hosted their second annual Truck Pull last April, and they are currently gearing up for this year's event, which will be held at Rahr Brewery in Fort Worth on March 19.

"It's gotten bigger every year we've done it, and we think this one is going to be the best yet," Peterson said. "Last year, we had 18 teams, and we're hoping to have between 20-25 this year."

This is the third time that Firefighting's Finest has taken home our Mover of the Month Award, and the first since December of 2014. They also have the distinction of being named our first-ever Mover of the Year Award back in 2011.

Since joining the program over six years ago, Firefighting's Finest Moving & Storage has delivered more than 230,000 pounds of food - that's nearly 192,000 meals - to the Tarrant Area Food Bank.

When asked what motivates the company to be so actively involved in their community, Peterson had a simple answer.

"We just believe that nobody in America should go hungry."

Congratulations to Firefighting's Finest Moving & Storage on this much-deserved recognition. Thank you for commitment to reducing food waste and fighting hunger in the Lone Star State!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
