April 16, 2015

Every month, Move For Hunger recognizes a mover that has shown a great amount of effort and dedication to our mission to reduce food waste and help those in need. These movers are the heart and soul of our successful operation, and without them Move For Hunger would never be possible. That’s why it’s important to highlight these partners for their continuous efforts, shining the light on these crucial members of our community.

For March, our Mover of the Month Award goes to Crown Relocations Chicago. Since February of 2010, our friends at Crown have been an active participant and advocate of Move For Hunger. To the date, Crown Relocations Chicago have collected nearly 40,000 pounds of food, equalling over 30,330 meals for residents in the Chicago area. Not only are we impressed, we are extremely grateful for their services.

On top of their everyday collections from local Chicago residents making the switch to a new home, Crown takes a new approach to food donations. They’re not just collecting, they are rescuing food from being mindlessly discarded. By partnering with local businesses in Chicago like Wal-Mart, Caputo’s Fresh Market, and Jewl-Osco, Crown Relocations Chicago is able to rescue all of the unsellable perishables and transfer them to the local food banks. Their unique approach and dedication to the mission is what enables us to continue our lifesaving services.

“The team at Crown Relocations is honored to be part of such a great cause.  We’re always eager to find new ways to have a positive impact on our community and help those in need,” said GM, Jamison Roudabush.

Lets give a round of applause for such a worthy partner of Move For Hunger. Congratulations Crown Relocations Chicago, you deserved it!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
