Corporate Housing Lends a Hand in Seattle

May 26, 2016

Seattle_CHPA5Move For Hunger is proud to be partnered with the Corporate Housing Providers Association (CHPA) and is continuously impressed with the dedication of its members. This past week at their western regional conference in Seattle, they stepped up to the plate as usual. The group of members from Aboda, Resi Housing, AvenueWest and People's Furniture volunteered their time and energy at the University District Food Bank by serving the local food insecure residents directly. Volunteers kept busy by checking in residents, stocking shelves, and assisting recipients by bagging their allocated food distribution.

Seattle_CHPA4The University District Food Bank serves residents in Northeast Seattle with a walk-in food bank that is open four days a week. In addition, this facility also provides delivery to those residents who are unable to drive and runs a lunch program for local elementary schools. Since this one location serves approximately 250 people a day, our volunteers were a huge help to this small food pantry. You can see more of this amazing group in action here.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR CONTINUED SUPPORT CHPA!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
