Community College of Aurora Back to School Food Drive

July 24, 2014

As we approach the month of August, the dreading thought of summer ending and returning back to school lurks in our minds. With all this anticipation of the school year starting, people forget about helping those in need; mainly, those who are at risk of hunger.

Fact: In Colorado, more than 755,000 people live on incomes that put them at risk of hunger, 35 percent of that number in need being children.

How To Hold a Food Drive

To combat this issue, The Community College of Aurora is hosting a food drive at their Centre Tech and Lowry campuses between September 15th and September 19th. Suggested food items to donate are peanut butter, jelly, canned beans, meat, and vegetables, rice, pasta, pasta sauce, cookies, crackers, condiments and salad dressings.

On September 17th, at 1600 East Centretech Parkway, Aurora, CO, tables will be set up where students and staff can bring in their food donations. And on September 18th, tables will be set up at 710 Alton Way, Denver, CO. A raffle ticket will be given to each individual who donates two food items for a chance to win prizes.

All donations will be brought to the Gateway Battered Women's Shelter by Colorado Hi-Tec Moving & Storage, an agent of Wheaton Van Lines. Come out and join The Community College of Aurora and support the fight against hunger.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
